Helen's Closet - Cameron Button Up

Helen's Closet

Cameron Button Up

I made a checked shirt

I have been wanting to make a button up checked shirt in this style for such a long time.  I just didn't ever seem to find the right fabric or the right pattern.  I bought a red and black checked shirt in the men's section at Peacocks about 7 years ago and I use it as a cardigan.  There was a time that I wore it everyday (it is perfect in all seasons and so good for layering).  I wanted to make a more feminine version of that shirt for myself.

Then a couple of weeks ago I started looking for some checked fabric to make a shirt. I found this stunning check Lavender Mammoth Flannel by Robert Kaufman fabric on the Sister Mintaka website and I knew it would make a lovely shirt. After the fabric was delivered I washed it almost immediately and then I was deciding what pattern I would like to make... Then Helen's Closet released the Cameron Button Up, it was meant to be.

I bought the pattern then made it up! I really enjoyed making this shirt.  I loved the instructions of how to pattern match the fabric, this is something I have often struggled with! I also liked the advice about cutting the yolk and pocket on the bias which I decided to do too. The instructions with this pattern are amazing, they are so detailed and there was not a time during this making process that I felt confused! It took me two afternoons to make the shirt, I was taking my time to make sure the outcome was good as I knew I would want to wear this a lot.

I am so pleased with how this turned out. In the first few photos I am wearing the shirt as a button up but I do intend to wear this shirt as a layering piece too as I have shown in the photo below.

Here are a few photos of the process of making the shirt for those of you who are interested.

I am so pleased I waited for this fabric and this pattern, I must have known something! I think I can see another Cameron button up in my future! Maybe in time for next winter.
