Nova Coat
Papercut Patterns
Improv Quilt/Patchwork Lining
I made this Nova Coat in October 2020. I had an idea that I would like to use some of my scraps to make the lining. I had never quilted or made a patchwork before but I had a book about beginner quilting and I knew that quilting and patchwork was basically sewing smaller pieces of fabric together to make a bigger piece of fabric (since then I have made a few quilts using patterns and thinking this back in 2020 was very naive, I have since discovered the science and precision of quilting and I love it, it is however very different to my first attempt on this coat lining where I just pulled a piece of fabric from my scrap box and added it, without any real thought of or prior planning, to the main body of fabric I was creating). This was very much an improv project and I loved creating it.
Anyway, all of that aside I was still super happy with the outcome of the quilt lining. Once the top was created I then added vertical lines that attached the wadding/batting which not only added warmth, but structure and made it look like a real finished quilt.
For the exterior of the coat I used vegan coating which is a polyester coating from Fabric Godmother. I chose the green colour, mainly because I have never had a green winter coat before and I really love green! This fabric also has quite a firm structure which makes it warm and also highlights the interesting shape of the coat.
The construction of the Nova Coat is interesting, it is not complicated but is different to other coats I have made in the past. I really enjoy all of the Papercut Patterns for this. They have a clever and interesting construction that give the final garment interesting details. I was happy that I took the time to quilt/patchwork the lining. I feel like even though it took me longer it made this a special project!
I made a size 4 in this Nova Coat, I also made the long length.
