Wildergown in Liberty Cotton Lawn
Friday Pattern Company
I recently went to Liberty on a fabric shopping trip with Helena who was visiting London from Sweden! We had a Sunday afternoon to fill so of course we went to Liberty to browse the beautiful fabrics.
I wasn't sure what fabric I wanted to buy but I had budgeted some money so that meant that I was able to buy enough fabric for a lovely floaty long dress. We were happily browsing the fabrics for a good hour or two (we had lunch in between) and it wasn't right until the very end of our time I decided on this lovely darker floral. It didn't take too long for me to decide I wanted to make the Friday Pattern Company Wildergown (my third one).
The day before our trip to Liberty we went to the Merchant and Mills shop in Rye. I was looking through their amazing sample patterns and I saw that some of the garments with finer fabrics had been finished with French seams (a technique where you sew a smaller seam allowance with wrong sides together then press the seams open and then press the seams so they have rights sides together then stitch another row of stitching to enclose the raw seams) and they looked so beautiful. When I got home I decided that my Wildergown would have French seams too. It was a bit tricky with the gathers but I am super happy with how this garment turned out with the French seams, it gives such a beautiful finish and all of the raw edges are concealed.
Here is the Little Rosy Cheeks label that I have used to finish the Wildergown.
Here is the French seam with the elastic in in. You can see the gathering underneath.
On the other Wildergowns I have made I have added elastic around the waist seam just to draw them in at the waist to add a little more shape to my figure. I was wondering if I could do this with my French seams as the seams were quite small. I found some 6mm elastic and a smaller saftey pin, made a small hole in the side seam and to my surprise the elastic went through the French seam channel quite easily! I just needed to secure the elastic when it came through the other side then stitch up the small gap I had unpicked in the side seam.
Twirling in my Wildergown
I also added extra length (as I had extra fabric) this gives the skirt more volume and makes the dress prefect for twirling in.

I am so pleased with how this Wildergown turned out. It seems like such a special make where I was able to carefully select the fabric with a sewing friend at the Liberty store, it really was an enjoyable make and I am so pleased with it. As it has the long sleeves I will be able to wear this one most of the year. In Summer I can wear it on cooler days with trainers or sandals and in Winter I can wear it with a long sleeve top underneath and leggings and boots.
